It's Just Good Business
Many of us were shocked to learn this week that the Utah Jazz traded their "star," Deron Williams, to the New Jersey Nets. Many questioned whether or not this was a smart move. I for one believe it was. Deron wasn't happy here in Utah, and his unhappiness was manifest in his performance on the court this season. It was painfully obvious that he wanted to be traded. Williams becomes a free agent next year, which means he would have probably left the Jazz to play for another team anyway. However, had the Jazz kept Williams, they would have come up empty handed. Through great negotiation skills the Jazz were able to trade Williams and get quite a bit in return. Through the trade, the Jazz lose Williams, but gain two new players straight up and two first round draft picks, not to mention an extra 3 million dollars. Not a bad deal. If Williams wasn't happy here, so be it. Hopefully he will be happier in New Jersey. At least the Jazz franchise was able to get a lot back from the trade. The NBA, just like other professional sport association, is essentially a business, and for a company or team to thrive and progress, they sometimes need to make some drastic changes. In short, thanks to the communication and negotiation skills of the Jazz big wigs, we Jazz fans can have hope for a brighter future. It won't come overnight, but nothing great ever really does.
